HAZARDOUS REMEDIATION PROGRAM
The Hazardous Remediation Program encompasses a wide range of activities to protect the tribal community and the environment by conducting hazard identifications and removing them. This includes conducting site investigations, carrying out remedial action plans, establishing procedures to mitigate risk of hazardous releases, and immediate spill response during emergencies. The program aims to clean up historic sources of contamination and prevent new sources from entering the environment. Key aspects involve conducting environmental site assessments & cleanup, hazardous waste & petroleum storage tank compliance inspections, and implementing environmental health & safety protocols by coordinating with departments, agencies & stakeholders.
Mission:
Under Hazardous Remediation, the program strives to revitalize the tribal community by removing historic sources of contamination and preventing new ones from entering the environment by ensuring compliance with applicable environmental laws and regulations during its activities.
Program Tasks:
The Hazardous Remediation section's duties include providing technical guidance to personnel who work with hazardous substances, compliance assistance, coordinating removal of hazardous substances, performing site-specific hazard remediation activities related to the assessment, remediation, monitoring, document management and closure of contaminated sites.
Key Projects:
Brownfields:

Location: 31055 Josie Billie Hwy, Big Cypress Reservation, Hendry County, Florida
Geographic Info-Lat/Long: 26.31773056 / -80.99027778
Area: 2.67 acres
Site Information: Unconfirmed information from interviews revealed the site was historically the location of a fire or a police station. During excavation for construction of a new medical center in 2015, petroleum odors from the soil prompted delay in construction. Soil analysis revealed heavy soil contamination from petroleum-based products. Over two months of soil and groundwater remediation through air sparging and soil removal was performed to attain cleanup target levels. A vapor barrier was installed over the contaminated area and the new building pad before resumption of the clinic construction. The new medical clinic is now complete. Regular monitoring of the site by soil and groundwater sampling are next courses of action for this site.
